Project brief
OPTIMED aims at promoting new opportunities, facilities, tools and skills that lead to the improvement of commercial connections and relationships between public and private operators in maritime transport and logistics sector from Southern – Eastern to Northern – Western ports of the Mediterranean Sea. The project will identify and spread the opportunities of the new maritime trade network and the potentialities of a supporting tool like the virtual logistics platform among economic operators from EU and Mediterranean Partner countries.

Objectives
- General objective
To strengthen the connection between the ports in the Mediterranean Sea basin through the creation of a new form of cooperation between countries in the Latin arc of the Tyrrhenian Sea and the countries of the southern shores of the Mediterranean Sea
- Specific objective
OPTIMED specific objective is the optimization of trade in the Mediterranean Sea basin through the improvement of commercial connections between public and private operators in maritime transport and logistics sector.
Main Expected Results
- Identified opportunities for economic operators and institutions coming from the optimization of the maritime trade network between the northern shores of the High Tyrrhenian arc and the southeastern shores of the Mediterranean Sea
- Interventions to port infrastructures of Porto Torres (Italy) and Beirut (Lebanon) planned in order to improve their performance as Ro-Ro hubs in the framework of the freight shipping network.
- Process of shifting freight from current modes of transportation to more efficient ones started by the implementation of the virtual platform supporting the new optimized maritime trade network
- Target group stakeholders stimulated to develop new business relationships based on opportunities of new optimized maritime trade network

The 2007-2013 ENPI CBC Mediterranean Sea Basin Programme is a multilateral Cross-Border Cooperation initiative funded by the European Neighborhood and Partnership Instrument (ENPI). The Programme objective is to promote the sustainable and harmonious cooperation process at the Mediterranean Basin level by dealing with the common challenges and enhancing its endogenous potential. It finances cooperation projects as a contribution to the economic, social, environmental and cultural development of the Mediterranean region. The following 14 countries participate in the Programme: Cyprus, Egypt, France, Greece, Israel, Italy, Jordan, Lebanon, Malta, Palestinian Authority, Portugal, Spain, Syria, and Tunisia. The Joint Managing Authority (JMA) is the Autonomous Region of Sardinia (Italy). Official Programme languages are Arabic, English and French.

Duration and Budget
Project activities will be deployed over a 24-month period from 31 December 2013 to 31 December 2015. Its total budget is €1,999,403.13 and it is financed by the European Union through the European Neighborhood and Partnership Instrument. The ENPI CBC Med Programme aims at reinforcing cooperation between the European Union and partner countries regions placed along the shores of the Mediterranean Sea
